Aims and Scope |
Cancer is a complex, non-linear, adaptive, evolving system comprised
of heterogeneous cell types situated in a particular micro- and
macro-environmental context. Despite its complexity, it is frequently
studied as though it was a simple, linear, static, homogeneous collection of cells. Most focus to date (clinical, experimental and theoretical) has been aimed at developing strategies to attack the tumour tissue thus neglecting the intricate interactions, both competitive and synergistic, between the many different components of the diseased tissue and the surrounding normal tissue. |
The aim of this workshop is to help in taking a more expansive view by bringing together researchers in the fields of cancer evolution, cancer biology, ecology, epidemiology and mathematical methods to begin a dialogue between these fields. The understanding of cancer could benefit from knowledge gained over many decades of research in ecology and evolutionary biology where similar problems arise. We hope that the methodologies and research insights gained in those fields could drive the conceptual understanding of cancer and lead to novel experimental designs with clinical implications. |

Place and dates |
The conference will be held at the
Palacio de los Condes de Valdeparaiso, in Almagro, Ciudad Real, a nice historic building used by the University of Castilla-La Mancha to host conferences, workshops and other events. All invited participants will be lodged at the Palace.
Participants are expected to arrive on September 1, 2010. The conference will start on September 2, 2010 and finish on Saturday, September 4, 2010.
